"Blues to the bone" is born from the need that the North American artist feels to reaffirm herself in her roots and her musical heritage; Chicago's Electric Blues floods this work from the first to the last song. It is the city of Velma Powell, it is her music and the language she knows best how to handle.
In this production there is stylistic coherence and rhythmic and sonorous clarity: this is blues of Chicago ladies and gentlemen, of the authentic. Recall that Velma is born and raised in the city of the wind, without fissures, her songs breathe the influence of great with which she is even consanguineously related: Brownie McGee, John Lee Hooker ... .but also appear among their notes the legacies of Muddy Waters , Little Walter (who plays his "Too late"), Howlin 'Wolf or Otis Rush.

The band Bluedays has had the luxury of counting for the recording with the inestimable collaboration of two musicians of international repercussion: Paul San MartÃ*n (San Sebastián) to the pianos and Hammonds, and David GarcÃ*a (Gijón-Madrid) to the harmonica; undoubtedly among the best and most reputable in their instruments throughout Europe.
12 songs make up the album: eleven originals, where Velma gives us lyrics full of sensitivity and double senses characteristic of the blues, and a single version that finishes rounding the solidity of the final set.

Punk rockers the Asexuals were formed in 1983 in Montreal, Canada. Guitarist Sean Friesen, bassist T.J. Collins, and drummer Paul Remington were all members of the group. A number of talented bassists served time with them off and on along the way, including Dom Pompeo, John Kastner, Blake Cheetah, and Yuri Mohacsi. In 1984, the Asexuals released a debut single and a debut album, Be What You Want, to a growing fan base that was waiting for more. The recordings received good reviews, but didn't capture the band at its very best, which happened to be on-stage before an energized audience.
Over the next few years the group toured Canada and Europe, opening for major crowd draws like PiL and D.O.A. The Asexuals also completed a number of other albums after that debut. The last, Fitzjoy, was released through the Cargo Records label in 1997. Some of band's tunes mixing hardcore attitude with pop-punk are "Time Will Tell," "Throw Me a Line," "World for the Taking," and "Language of Men." ~ Charlotte Dillon

"Young Lions" is a term that jazz journalists used to describe the long list of straight-ahead, acoustic-oriented jazz improvisers who were born in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, and London native Wayne Escoffery is among the many Young Lions who started building his catalog in the early 2000s. Escoffery, who plays post-bop and hard bop, is a tenor saxophonist with a big, full tone; his influences on the tenor include John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, and Sonny Rollins, among others. Escoffery plays the soprano sax as a second instrument, and his most obvious inspirations on the soprano include Coltrane and Shorter. But whether he is on the tenor or the soprano, Escoffery has maintained a decidedly straight-ahead perspective that is quite faithful to the spirit of the Young Lions movement.
Although he is originally from Great Britain, he has spent most of his life in the northeastern part of the United States. Born in London on February 23, 1975, Escoffery was only 11 when he left the U.K. with his mother and moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1986. That year, he joined the New Haven Trinity Boys Choir, and it was also in 1986 that he began studying the tenor sax with saxophonist/clarinetist Malcolm Dickinson. Escoffery left the New Haven Trinity Boys Choir when he was 16, and playing jazz saxophone -- not singing -- became his primary focus. Escoffery was still in his teens when he met the famous alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, who Escoffery has described as a mentor and a major inspiration in his life; Escoffery studied with McLean (who died in 2006) extensively at the Hartt School, a performing arts school in West Hartford. After that, he attended the New England Conservatory in Boston and graduated from that institution with a Masters in 1999 before moving to New York City the following year at the age of 25. Escoffery's visibility in the jazz world continued to increase; in the 2000s, his long list of activities ranged from being a member of trumpeter Tom Harrell's quintet to playing with the Charles Mingus ghost band to touring with veteran drummer Ben Riley's Monk Legacy Septet (a Thelonious Monk tribute band). Escoffery also backed his share of jazz vocalists in the 2000s, including Laverne Butler, Mary Stallings, Carolyn Leonhart, Cynthia Scott and Nancie Banks. Escoffery's first album as a leader, Times Change, was recorded for the German Nagel-Hayer label in early 2001; a second Nagel-Heyer studio date, Intuition, was recorded in 2003. Escoffery's first live album, Veneration, was recorded in 2006 for the Savant label and was followed by a studio session for Savant, Hopes and Dreams, in 2007 with Tom Harrell. In 2009, he led the groove-based date Uptown and the collaborative Playdate (both on Posi Tone). The following year he issued Tides of Yesterday, a collection of ballads and swinging neo-bop tunes in collaboration with his wife, vocalist Carolyn Leonhart (Steely Dan). Escoffery spent the next year touring and performing with the Mingus Big Band. In 2012, he released Only Son of One, his debut album with Sunnyside, followed the next year by Grown Folks Music, and he won the 62nd Annual Downbeat Critics Poll for rising star on tenor saxophone. Two concert albums, Live at Firehouse 12 and Live at Smalls, were followed by the studio effort Standard Solo and Duet Sketches in 2016 with Avi Rothbard. Escoffery responded to the state of the nation under President Donald Trump in early 2018 with Vortex, featuring his quartet with pianist David Kikoski, drummer Ralph Peterson, and bassist Ugonna Okegwo. The set also included guest appearances from Jeremy Pelt, Kush Abadey, and Jacquelene Acevedo.

In many ways, Willis Alan Ramsey's debut album makes him sound like the archetypical Texas singer/songwriter; there's more than a little Guy Clark in his approach, a healthy dose of Townes Van Zandt, a dash of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and one can hear the echoes of what Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett would draw from this music. But Ramsey's style -- an engaging mixture of cowboy poetry, post-hippie wit and wonder, and singer/songwriter introspection -- burst forth fully formed in 1972, while Van Zandt was still barely a rumor outside the Lone Star State, and Clark had yet to make himself heard on vinyl; Ramsey was at once a contemporary of the first wave of Texas songwriters, and one of the artists who blazed the trail for what would become one of the most fruitful tributaries of American roots music. While a number of artists covered material from Willis Alan Ramsey (the Captain & Tennille most famously with "Muskrat Candlelight" -- retitled "Muskrat Love" -- though Waylon Jennings, Jerry Jeff Walker, and even Jimmy Buffett fared better creatively), one listen to the album is enough to convince anyone Ramsey was as much a performer as a songwriter. The bluesy drawl and frayed edges of Ramsey's voice convey a road-worn maturity that betrayed his youth (he was in his early twenties when he cut these sessions), and his production (in collaboration with Denny Cordell) is remarkably intelligent and imaginative for someone with so little experience in the studio. From the tragic road story of "The Ballad of Spider John," the weary nostalgia of "Goodbye to Old Missoula," and the Woody Guthrie tribute of "Boy from Oklahoma," to the horny twang of "Geraldine and the Honeybee" and the goofy music-biz meditation of "Satin Sheets," Ramsey hardly makes a false move or a poorly considered gesture through the course of the album's 40 minutes. Part of the mystique that has sprung up around Willis Alan Ramsey's debut album is that he dropped from sight after recording it (due to differences with his record company and a lack of enthusiasm for the realities of the music business), and has yet to release a follow-up, and it's hard to imagine anyone who has heard it not hoping there's more where this came from. If your recording career was to be contained in a single album, though, you'd be very fortunate if it were as good as Willis Alan Ramsey.
