    05. It's So Hard To Believe
    06. I Gotta' Go
The soul blues trio Trampled Under Foot consists of siblings Danielle Schnebelen (lead vocals and bass), Nick Schnebelen (guitars and vocals) and Kris Schnebelen, (drums). They grew up with the blues in Kansas City. Their father, Bill, was a blues guitarist in the band Little Eva and would regularly take his three children to jam sessions. Growing up, the siblings played separately in numerous bands over the years. Danielle was in Fresh Brew (1999-2004), Kris was a staple at blues clubs, and Nick was in Killing Floor (or K-Floor), and briefly, Buddahead. Missing the family camaraderie, the siblings formed Trampled Under Foot in 2000. The band released four studio sessions: Trampled Under Foot (2006), May I Be Excused in (2008), and Wrong Side of the Blues in (2011). They also issued Live at the Notodden Blues Festival in 2010. The combination of those releases and non-stop touring caught the attention of the jazz and blues label Telarc, who signed the band in 2013. They issued their fifth studio album, Badlands, that same year.

    Artist: Trampled Under Foot
Title: Wrong Side Of The Blues
    Year Of Release: 2011
    Label: TUF Records
    Genre: Blues, Blues Rock
    Quality: Flac (image, .cue, log)
    Total Time: 52:04
    Total Size: 376 Mb (scans)

    Tracklist:
    01. Get It Straight (3:44)
    02. Bad Woman Blues (3:27)
    03. Wrong Side of the Blues (5:05)
    04. She's Long, She's Tall, She's Gone (4:00)
    05. Goodbye (6:04)
    06. Heart On The Line (4:22)
    07. The Fool (6:00)
    08. Have A Real Good Time (3:47)
    09. Just Tell Yourself (3:09)
    10. Evil Train (4:24)
    11. It Would Be Nice (4:06)
    12. The Better Life (3:49)
The three siblings in Trampled Under Foot -- Danielle Schnebelen, lead vocals and bass; guitarist and vocalist Nick Schnebelen, and singer/drummer Kris Schnebelen -- are the children of blues musicians Bob & Lisa Schnebelen. The folks never made it big outside of their hometown of Kansas City, but their kids have been tearing up the scene since they started playing together in 2006. Regular gigs around their hometown started the buzz that intensified when they took first place at the Blues Foundations International Blues Challenge in 2008. Nick took home The Albert King Award for most promising guitarist that same year, which led to headlining shows at festivals all over the U.S. and Europe. Unlike a lot of young blues players, Trampled Under Foot stick pretty much to their roots here; they're a blues band, not a rock band playing blues. There isn't a weak track here, but several tunes stand out. The gritty shuffle of "Get It Straight" has Danielle delivering a bold, forceful vocal with Nick's guitar flipping between nasty slide guitar fills and short, stinging bent-note solos. Nick supplies a haunted vocal on "Evil Train," a dark, cinematic tune with a touch of spaghetti western twang added to the guitar and a slight country feel to the overall arrangement. Danielle's intense Etta James-style testifying adds to the heartbroken feel of "It Would Be Nice," which features another great solo from Nick and Mike Finnegan's soulful Hammond B-3. "Goodbye" uses a late-night '50s R&B progression to showcase Danielle's soaring vocal and Finnegan's indigo organ work. The band churns out a heavy boogie groove on "Have a Real Good Time," with the help of Finnegan's B-3 and piano. The tune brings the early work of Ike & Tina Turner, to mind with Danielle over the top vocal. The siblings get funky on "Just Tell Yourself," with another solid vocal from Danielle and grittier guitar work from Nick. Producer Tony Braunagel allows every instrument and vocal to shine through with a minimal touch that keeps everything sounding down-home and nasty.

Transatlantic Railroad - Express To Oblivion (Reissue) (1967-68/2000)

    Artist: Transatlantic Railroad
    Title: Express To Oblivion
    Year Of Release: 1995
    Label: RD Records
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Blues Rock, Acid Rock
    Quality: Flac (tracks)
    Total Time: 37:55
    Total Size: 295 Mb (scans)

    Tracklist:
    1. Camp Towanga - 3:17
    2. Fred Chicken Blues - 3:29
    3. Tehama Street Song - 7:33
    4. Elephant - 12:16
    5. Old English 800 - 5:54
    6. Irahs (Kent Housman) - 2:36
    7. Good Times (Kent Housman) - 2:46
Kent Housman - Rhythm Guitar, Lead Vocals
    Stephen Meyers - Lead Guitar
    Jamie Kindt - Bass, Vocals
    Ron Vanbianchi - Drums, Vocals
    Geoff Mayer - Organ
These circa 1967-1968 (the liner notes aren't entirely specific) recordings by this very obscure Marin County band are very much of their time and place. It's fairly heavy psychedelic rock with a fairly heavy blues influence, apt to jump into free-form passages and multi-sectioned, lengthy tracks with an improvisational feel and a stoned vibration to the lyrics. In the structural sense, then, they're pretty similar to the early Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service, and to the freakier aspects of Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & the Fish, and Big Brother & the Holding Company. What they were lacking that the other groups had, to varying degrees, were outstanding songs and arrangements, virtuoso instrumentalists, or excellent vocalists. It's ambitious but meandering stuff, and while the testaments to the group by a couple of fans in the liner notes make it clear that the band had its importance as a communicator of the psychedelic experience in a live setting, Transatlantic Railroad does sound like a bill-filler in the larger scheme of San Francisco Bay Area '60s psychedelia. And a rather callow one at that, though they have the cheek to quote from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's "East West" in the 12-minute "Elephant," an opus that's about as graceful as its title. The most appealing tracks here are actually the simpler ones, those being the country-folk-flavored "Irahs" and "Good Times," which with its Zombies-garage feel sounds like it was recorded earlier than the rest of the material.

Ugly Valley Boys - Iron Mine (2018)

    Artist: Ugly Valley Boys
    Title: Iron Mine
    Year Of Release: 2018
    Label: Self Produced
    Genre: Country
    Quality: MP3 320 Kbps
    Total Time: 34:47
    Total Size: 101 MB
    Tracklist:
    1. Mire (3:11)
    2. Mountain Man (4:14)
    3. Honey (3:11)
    4. Sideshow (3:12)
    5. Hellmaker (3:10)
    6. Night (2:54)
    7. Turn The Screw (2:19)
    8. Kiss The Hand (3:28)
    9. Simple Life (2:54)
    10. Creepers (3:19)
    11. First Sight (2:50)
From Salt Lake City, The Ugly Valley Boys evoke the lonesome sound of the desert, the classic soul of country, and the open space of the West in original songs that are wickedly engaging and smartly crafted. So many bands try to imbibe their music with a vintage feel and Western space by using copious amounts of chorus or reverb, or blowing wads of cash on vintage gear. Ugly Valley's guitar player, singer, and songwriter Ryan Eastlyn takes the road less traveled with the use of moaning, melodic chorus lines that are so excellent, they vault this band from a relative unknown to one responsible for one of the better albums put out so far in 2011.
The melodic chorus-driven songs with punk undertones are counterbalanced by dark and gritty deep roots songs that could be considered just as much blues as country. As impressed as I am by Eateryn's ear in crafting the vocals in these songs, without any message or meaning behind the lyrics, the experience would be shallow. The Ugly Valley Boys pull you in with Braxton's engaging rhythm and Ryan's voice, but what keeps you engaged is the soul embedded in the songwriting.
I could break down each song on this album, but I don't see the point. There's not a bad song here. At the moment, the track that most impresses me is "Alota Guns", but this album shows all the earmarks of one whose best track changes by week, until every song has filled that slot and after a couple of months you look down and this CD is still stuck in the player.
The instrumentation is great as well, from Ryan and Braxton, and also from Mike Sasich and Brad Wheeler who they brought in to play some tasteful lead lines on various tracks. If I had a suggestion for the Ugly Valley Boys, it would be that there could be more breadth to the music. The stripped down approach is appreciated, but this music is just too good to be devoid of maybe another layer or two of instrumentation, at least in the recorded setting. The lead instruments in Double Down, though great, seem to be add-ons at times instead of intermixed with the rest of the music.
But the thing about great songwriting is that it trumps all. Any concerns about instrumentation or lineups or names of bands are all put to rest simply by songs that speak to the heart in universal themes, and that is exactly what The Ugly Valley Boys do. I was going to give this album 1 3/4 of the maximum 2 guns that I have the authority to afford an album, because I do think Double Down leaves some room for improvement, but in the end this album is just too good, has too many good individual songs to call it anything but great.

A fine jazz player with a beautiful tone who has spent most of his career in the studios, Urbie Green is highly respected by his fellow trombonists. He started playing when he was 12; was with the big bands of Tommy Reynolds, Bob Strong, and Frankie Carle as a teenager; and worked with Gene Krupa during 1947-1950. Green had a stint with Woody Herman's Third Herd, appeared on some of the famous Buck Clayton jam sessions (1953-1954), and was with Benny Goodman off and on during 1955-1957. He played with Count Basie in 1963, and spent a period in the 1960s fronting the Tommy Dorsey ghost band (1966-1967), but has mostly stuck to studio work. Urbie Green recorded frequently as a leader in the 1950s up to 1963 (for Blue Note, Vanguard, Bethlehem, ABC-Paramount, and dance band-oriented records for RCA and Command). He has appeared much less often in jazz settings since then, but did make two albums for CTI in 1976-1977.
