The People's Purcell reunites tenor Michael Slattery and La Nef to perform some of the most beautiful music by Henry Purcell (1659-1695).
Though grounded in the baroque tradition, the vast body of work by Purcell is fertile ground for musical explorations. The People's Purcell invites listeners to hear this music in a new way.
Set with shruti box, archlute, cittern, flute, nyckelharpa, baroque violin, viola, cello, and viola da gamba, Purcell's baroque songs take on a different flavour in these new arrangements by Michael Slattery, Grégoire Jeay, Seán Dagher, and Amanda Keesmaat.
As with their previous album, Dowland in Dublin (ACD2 2650), La Nef and Michael Slattery take inspired creative liberties with Purcell's music. "Over time, I have learned to hear the profundity in the subtleties as well as the sheer variety of Purcell's musical language, each time with renewed pleasure. With this album, we invite listeners to discover Purcell in a light that we believe he would have appreciated," says Sylvain Bergeron, Artistic Director of La Nef.
Founded in 1991 in Montreal, La Nef creates, produces, and distributes concerts, multidisciplinary and multimedia shows, physical and digital albums, musical tales, and CD-books. Monte Dunn was a noted folk and folk-rock session guitarist in the 1960s, playing on records by Ian & Sylvia, Fred Neil, David Blue, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. In the late 1960s he teamed up with singer Karen Cruz and the duo made a rare, self-titled folk-rockish album for the Cyclone label. It's a pleasant if ordinary record with some tinges of country music and fey baroque orchestration, with the pair's voices blending well in earthy and imaginative harmonies. ~ Richie Unterberger

Arlo Davy Guthrie (born July 10, 1947) is an American folk singer-songwriter. Like his father, Woody Guthrie, he is known for singing songs of protest against social injustice. Guthrie's best-known work is his debut piece, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree", a satirical talking blues song about 18 minutes in length that has since become a Thanksgiving anthem. His only top-40 hit was a cover of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans". His song "Massachusetts" was named the official folk song of the state in which he has lived most of his adult life. Guthrie has also made several acting appearances. He is the father of four children, who have also had careers as musicians.

Psych-rock combo Indian Puddin' and Pipe formed in Seattle in 1966--originally dubbed the West Coast Natural Gas, the group initially comprised singer/guitarist Kep, guitarists Chuck Bates and Kris Larson, bassist Dave Burke and drummer Jeff LaBrache. A latter-day lineup minus Kep and Bates and featuring vocalist Pat Craig and guitarist Steve Mack relocated to San Francisco and in late 1967 issued the lone WCNG single, the Matthew Katz-produced "Go Run and Play." Katz--the manager of Moby Grape, It's a Beautiful Day and other luminaries of the San Francisco psych scene--structured his contracts so that different lineups could appear under a given group's name anytime and anywhere he desired; one lineup of Indian Puddin' and Pipe already existed, but Katz nevertheless rechristened West Coast Natural Gas with the name as well, moving Craig to keyboards and recruiting vocalist Lydia Mareno for what is now considered the definitive version of the group. Indian Puddin' and Pipe never recorded a full-length LP, but did produce four excellent tracks for the compilation Fifth Pipe Dream, issued on Katz's San Francisco Sound label in 1968. This incarnation of the group split soon after, with Mareno later resurfacing in Stoneground and Craig and Mack reuniting in Pipe.

This 1971 recording signals the beginning of Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander's fruitful relationship with MPS, lasting over a decade and encompassing some dozen albums. Originally touted as heir to Oscar Peterson's crown, Alexander is famous for his virtuoso melding of jazz, the sounds of the Caribbean and blues. The classic Dave Brubeck Quartet's bassist Eugene Wright, calypso percussionist Montego Joe, and ace drummer Duffy Jackson round out the quartet. Montevideo jumps off with percussive Latin two-beat verve and a witty piano filled with quotes. The ballad Where is Love is a searching romantic serenade, and Monty transforms the Beatle's Here Comes The Sun into blues-laced Latinesque with a taste of boogie. Monty takes the standard Love Walked In at a brisk pace as he demonstrates his considerable straight-ahead jazz chops, bop quotes and all. Check out the tasty walking bass and drum solos. The luscious calypso Brown Skin Girl is followed by Monty's tender, wistful solo rendition of his The Dream Is Mine. The group stretches out on Miles Davis' iconic So What, grounding the tune with a driving Latin-rock beat. They say variety is the spice of life and Monty Alexander and co. have seasoned this album to perfection.

Since their inception in 2008 Morningside Fats have strived to deliver raw, vintage blues music in the same manner of the great masters of the last century. Their fifth collection of all original songs from the pen of guitarist vocalist Paul Renton was recorded live to tape at the Barn Studios Plainland Australia. The resultant album seems to perfectly represent what all the previous recordings, tours, festival gigs, support spots and regular pub performances have been leading up to. It's warts and all and honest as the day is long. And the title "Lies, Damn Lies and the Blues" neatly summarises the goings on of the local blues community.
