Dokken CD- "Back for the Attack"

**This is not my review, however I agree with each and EVERY single word!!!**

I've heard stories from many people saying this was the first Compact Disc that they owned. "Back for the attack" sort of ushered in the era of 50-Minute plus albums. But my copy of 'Back for the Attack" was on vinyl (Album, LP, Whatever you may call it.) The cover is on my list of favorites, the classic logo over a detailed painting.

"Back for the Attack" is arguably Dokken's finest hour. Never again would they reach such staggering heights. George Lynch put on a guitar show for the ages, he uses every trick in his arsenal on this album.

The melodies are incredible. Don Dokken was an extremely skilled vocalist. Starting song "Kiss of death" contains some steady riffing. The guitar and chorus of "Prisoner" blend perfectly. The lyrics of "Night by night" describe a dialog with a girl - "Baby, can't you see we live it night by night, it's just you and me". "Standing in the shadows" features a creative distorted lick that only intensifies once the Drums and Bass kick in. "Heaven Sent" is a great atmospheric track. As far as guitar instrumentals go "Mr. Scary" should be in the quality department with "Eruption". Masterful shredding from Guitar guru George Lynch.

"So many tears" is engaging with strong lyrics "There's only so many tears you can cry/There's only so many ways you can say good-bye". The opening chords of "Burning like a flame" are engaging. The chorus goes "Our love that's burning, burning like a flame/Don't you know that it's Our love that's never gonna change/Every time I touch you, it just makes me go insane/Our love that's burning like a flame". The guitar solo is nice too.

    TRACK LIST:

    1. Kiss of Death
    2. Prisoner
    3. Night by Night
    4. Standing in the Shadows
    5. Heaven Sent
    6. Mr. Scary
    7. So Many Tears

    9. Lost Behind the Wall

Dream Warriors was a cool song, pretty neat that it got used in "Nightmare on Elm Street". Freddy Kruger was bad-ass!

    Rainbow

    **This is not my review**

    Pros
At their peak, this band was as good as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and others.

    Cons
Glover and Blackmore toned down the band's sound on the later albums.

    The Bottom Line
This showcases Rainbow's work and proves how underrated they really are.

    Full Review
I am always amazed when self professed hard rock fans mention some of the greatest bands of the 70's but overlook Rainbow. After all, these guys were one of the most popular hard rock bands in the world for almost ten years. However, through the years people seem to have forgotten them while still paying homage to bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.

For those unfamiliar with the band, Rainbow basically evolved from the legendary band Deep Purple. The band was the idea of Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and dare I say at their peak blew Purple out of the water (that they lacked the overall consistency and staying power.) When Rainbow was formed, it stemmed from the fact that Blackmore had grown frustrated with Purple's musical direction.

In August 1975 "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" was released and what an album it was. The band featured legendary singer Ronnie James Dio on vocals and began Blackmore's fascination with things considered medieval (a subject Dio has often touched upon in his solo career). The early work of Rainbow is considered the band's best work.

Unfortunately, the original lineup did not last and within just a few years, members began to come and go and the band's work became a mixed bag. However, some of their lesser known work is quite impressive.

The "Very Best of Rainbow" covers all areas of the band's career including highlights from the later years. Rainbow's constant lineup changes makes this an interesting listen due to the various styles and in particular the various vocalists who have been a part of Blackmore's band.

The following is a listing of the tracks, with my thoughts on each. I rated each song on a scale of one to ten.

Man on the Silver Mountain-(10)the album starts with probably the band's most remembered track. This one is still occassionally heard on classic rock radio. The song is killer with Blackmore's trademark guitar work and Dio's soaring voices. It also marks the beginning of Blackmore's medieval fascination.

Catch the Rainbow-(9)this track comes from Ritchie Blackmore's Raiinbow (the band's first release) and showcases the darker side of the band. While the song is somewhat catchy, the sound is slightly thicker than "Man On The Silver Mountain. The beauty of this song is the excellent bass playing of Craig Gruber, who was more well-known for his work with another Dio led outfit called Elf.

Starstruck-(10)-after having tremendous success with their debut release, Rainbow decided to return the following year with a heavier sound. In some regards they seemed to be shying away from the Deep Purple sound and going for more of a Sabbath sound. This track is probably the best on the album. It features the Munic Philharmonic Orchestra giving it a fuller sound. Many hard bands have tried this formula but Rainbow has to be considered pioneers. Another soung dealing with sword and sorecery. This may be their best song.

Kill the King-(10)-by 1977, the original band began to fall apart despite having two hugely successful albums. The band added bassist Bob Daisley (who had done many things in his career include write most of the classic Ozzy Osbourne solo songs) and keyboardist David Stone. Despite the changes, this is still considered one of the band's finest songs coming from the album "Long Live Rock N'Roll. The sound isn't quite as heavy, but in many ways is a companion piece to the "Rainbow Rising" album. This hard rocker is a favorite among fans and had actually been featured in the band's live show from a year before. It did breed controversy with its lyrics.

Long Live Rock N'Roll(9)-the title track actually is a little different in sound to some of the other tracks on the album. Slightly more catchy, this song sounds like it good have came from their debut release.

    Gates of Babylon(9)-having had success with "Stargazer," Blackmore decided to us a string accompainment once again. The song while not as compelling showed how truly gifted a songwriter that Blackmore is. This features some of his most emotional guitar work. Some would argue this was their last truly classic song, though I disagree. {Itch agrees with the last sentence}

Since You Been Gone-(8)-In 1979, Ronnie James Dio left Rainbow due to frustration that Blackmore had basically taken over the band and was writing most of the material. Dio would go on to record a couple of albums with Sabbath in the early 80's and then form his own band (he still rocks to this day). This track marked the debut of vocalist Graham Bonnet. Bonnet was an interesting choice because his vocals while quite good, weren't anywhere as powerful as Dio's. However, the key to understand this track and the overall album is the fact that Roger Glover joined the band on bass to help Blackmore with the songwriting. Glover also produced the album and decided to take the band in a more commercial direction. This proved in some ways to be a wise decision as this track cracked the UK Top 10. However, it was a slower song and left many of the older fans disgusted.

All Night Long (7)-this song while slightly more rocking in my opinion still wasn't the heavy rock fans had grown to expect from Rainbow. However, this one also cracked the Top 10 and showcased the talents of new keyboardist Don Airey.

I Surrender-(8)In 1981, Blackmore decided he wanted another singer and hired a young American named Joe Lynn Turner. In addition, drummer Cozy Powell who had played for the band for five years left and was replaced by Bobby Rondinelli Rainbow definitely had some great musicians through the years). The title of the album was "Difficult to Cure" and in some regards this release showed Rainbow at their most diverse. This track while rocking featured Turner's killer vocals and in some regards was less commercial than the previous album. This song was their biggest hit to date.

Can't Happen Here (9)-the followup to "I Surrender" was a killer track that showed more texture in the song playing. Blackmore sounded like he really was enjoying himself again.

Jealous Lover (10)-this was an interesting choice for this album. This track which is hard rocking actually was never released as a single but is considered a standout to many fans. It is good to hear the band making good music again.

Stone Cold (8)-In 1982, Blackmore began to notice a chance in rock music. The disco era was thankfully beginning to disappear and bands with a more commercial sound were becomng successful. Blackmore realized that he needed to do the same to return to his former glory and put out "Straight Between the Eyes." As a whole, however, the album was a let down and contained few straight out rockers. This song was a hit for the band but would be defined as more of a midtempo song. It does have a catchy chorus and sounds just enough like Rainbow to make it a good song.

Power(9)-this classic song was a throwback to the older days and features some of Blackmore's most impressive guitar work in years. A heavy song that had long time fans hoping Rainbow would return to this sound.

Can't Let You Go(6)-this track comes from the band's final release, "Difficult to Cure." Unfortunately, the countless lineup changes and changing of styles seemed to have caught up with the band. This track, while melodic is one of the weak points of an otherwise great compliation. Blackmore sounds bored on this one and in some regards I feel the same way when listening to this Rainbow-lite track.

    Street of Dreams (8)-this track was a highlight from an otherwise mediocre album. This song features the excellent vocals of Joe Lynn Turner and is quite catchy. It probably should have been a bigger hit for the band, but Blackmore's guitar work seems too toned down on this one. {For Itch this is MY MOST FAVORITE Rainbow song}

"The Very Best of Rainbow" clearly shows a band that knew how to rock. While their sound get softer through the years, there is enough material here to satisfy any fan of real classic rock.

**A review that I agree with**

Cinderella burst on to the music scene in 1986 with Night Songs. They had been discovered by Bon Jovi and they have a similar "light metal" sound. While Bon Jovi had his moments, Cinderella was a more consistent band which appealed to an audience used to listening to standard hard-rock.

Night Songs may not be the best album in their catalog, but it does have a certain charm and includes many of the bands better known songs. Many debut albums normally have one song that propels the band on to greatness and multi-album deals but the rest of the album normally falls flat. That isn't really the case here fortunately. Cinderella knew what they were doing on the road and in the studio and they really let it all hang out here.

Night Songs is really Tom Kiefer's baby. He wrote all the songs and does all the vocals and plays guitar on every track, plus a little piano. Also on guitar is Jeff LaBar who happen's to be a pretty good lead guitarist. He's definitely studied his Aerosmith. Fred Coury is a great drummer and while he doesn't stand out too much, he really lays down the beat well. Rounding out the group is Eric Brittingham on bass.

    Track By Track discussion
    Night Songs
The title track opens the album and kind of gives a false impression of what to expect from Cinderella. It's a really dark tune with a slow grinding riff, almost dirge-like. This is a cool tune and but not what Cinderella normally put out.

    Shake Me
Here we go! This is the Cinderella most people know. It's an uptempo rocker about rock 'n' roll and sex. A lot of fun with just the right amount of sleaze. Tom Keifer really has a great voice for this trashy 80s stuff. He's got a very Stephen Tyler-esque way of singing that just sounds wonderful. I've heard that singing in his falsetto really hurt his voice and trying to imitate him on this song, it's easy to see why.

    Nobody's Fool
Cinderella could rock, but they could also slow it down and do some great power ballads. Nobody's Fool is their perfect show case for their talents and it is just as good today as it was 14 years ago. The lyrics here are great and the I'm not your fool, nobody's fool chorus is instantly singable. An 80s classic in every way.

    Nothin' For Nothin'
Around this song, the album starts to slip a little. While not bad, this rocker isn't very memorable. Tom Keifer can really sell a song with his vocals though and he does manage to salvage this one from the "why did it make the record" pile.

    Once Around The Ride
Well he can't salvage them all. This track doesn't have very many redeeming qualities and kind of falls flat. You can't win 'em all I guess.

    Hell On Wheels
It's about this point in the album where people start saying "I've heard all this before. Where's the promise that this album showed in the first 3 tracks?" I'm kinda wondering that myself. While not terrible it's really just filler and you know it.

    Somebody Save Me
Here we are again! Somebody Save Me is a great hard rockin' tune with pretty nasty sounding vocals and a mean riff. Cinderella sounds angry here and it works really well. For some reason their darker material always appealed to me a lot more than the lighter fluff, Somebody save me indeed! This song is great all the way around.

    In From The Outside
Tom Keifer actually has a really cool voice when he's not singing in falsetto. He puts it to work here at the start of the song. It's gives an interesting feel to the song before he turns on his "Cinderella" voice. This song isn't bad but sounds a lot like Aerosmith to me.

    Push, Push
Pure Cinderella sleaze. Not all that great a song, but fun to listen to. I think it got a little airplay, but it certainly wasn't a big hit.

    Back Home Again
I really like the closing track, but it's not considered one of their best. It's a lot fun though and just has a great vibe. It's a fast paced hard rocker that which is in adequate closer for a good (if not great) debut album.

Cinderella sounds great here and only improved on their next release Long Cold Winter. They are definitely a hair band in every sense of the word (check out the cover of this album!) and the music really reflects that. This disc is a lot of fun and recommended for any fan of sleazy blues-rock and the 80s. Itch agree's!

Re: What song you listening to?

    Yes 90125

One of the greatest rock bands ever!! The talent in this band has not been surpassed since the early 90's! When I listen to current music today and then I listen to this band . . . I really do scratch my head! Yes was such a progressive band compared to the shit that's out today! In my opinion there was a time when bands wrote music with the idea of creating something beautiful. Todays bands are in it for the money and you can hear it in their music!! If you want to purchase an album from the past that was really about music this is a MUST Buy!!

**This is not my review but I agree totaly**

Ok, this is off the beaten metal track for the Iceman... but YES does have some excellent music and grooves! YES was one of the tapes that my father had in the car; I enjoyed the music as much as he did! (*Whoa. I liked my DAD's music??? No freakin' way!*)

Anyway... onto the music! It's a softer rock, with some solid lyrics! Definitely not your style of rock nowadays! But it is enjoyable to listen to. =)

The band members are as follows:

    Jon Anderson- vocals **Uniqur Voice**
Chris Squire- Bass and backing vocals **Top 3 Bassist's of all time**
Trevor Rabin- Guitars, keyboards, backing vocals
Alan White- Drums, percussions, backing vocals
    Tony Kaye- keyboards

The music on this CD has a lot more of the horns; the keyboards... which they blended in especially well... it reminds me a little bit of Asia! Speaking of which... I have GOT to find a copy of Asia's CD!

    1. Owner of a Lonely Heart- This song starts off the CD; it is also one of their best!! The drums start this one off fast and strong; and the guitars join in... with a simple yet very catchy groove! Later in the song, the guitar and keyboards solo is almost trancelike... so soft and melodious... then the chorus breaks in! The vocals are solid, and the overall music of this track will get you dancing a little bit in your seat as you sing along....

    After my own indecision
    They confused me so
My love said never question your will at all
In the end you've got to go
    Look before you leap
And don't you hesitate at all-no no

    Owner of a lonely heart
    Owner of a lonely heart
    Much better than...
    Owner of a broken heart...

    2. Hold On- The drums are quite nice on this track; but I think it's the vocals that's the strength of this song! The music otherwise, could've blended better with the vocals though.... still a solid cut however!

    Hold on- hold on
    Wait! Take your time
    Think it through
Yes! I can make it through

    3. It Can Happen- Now, this song is EXCELLENT! The lyrics are well written; the vocals are such that you would find yourself singing along with it as soon as the song starts! The music is quite melodious... the drums are soft, yet matches the rest of the music very well. Just a song you'd want to listen to over and over again....

    You can mend the wires
You can feed your soul apart
    You can touch your life
You can bring your soul alive
    It can happen to you
    It can happen to me
It can happen to everyone eventually

    4. Changes- This song starts off great!! The keyboards and the drums are jammin'... almost makes you wait and listen some more... then they fade out and the keyboards are left once again, to build back up again.... the music itself changes from time to time... making you wonder, almost, how the song is going to end! But honestly, it is terrific to listen to! The lyrics deal with falling out of love; making for a sad song. But the music is a little too upbeat for the lyrics.. that's my only beef with this cut...

    I look into the mirror
    I see no happiness
All the warmth I gave you
    Has turned to emptiness
The love we had has fallen
The love we used to share
    You?ve left me believing
    In love that wasn?t there

    5. Cinema- An instrumental cut on the CD? you can hear the keyboards taking over on this one? and the percussions too? this was recorded live in London; and it?s pretty good, but I usually just skip over this one. **Itch Doesn't skip over this one**

    6. Leave It- The singing starts off this song without any music; reminds me of Queen?s Bohemian Rhapsody? until the drums starts a slow rhythm? and the strings join in. The lyrics really don?t make sense to me, however. This is a decent song; I can usually leave it though.

    Get home you?re not alone
You just broke out of the danger zone
Be there to show your face
    On another dreamy day

    7. Our Song- I really like how YES melded the keyboards and the strings on this song! I enjoy listening to this cut very much? The drums are rock-solid, and the singing is smooth and flowing. The song?s about listening to a song that just makes you listen and enjoy the music for itself; not for any kind of message at all, just pure enjoyment. The keyboards are quite interesting, near the end of the song, you can hear the higher notes slipping it?s way into your ears?.

    Touching of the healing heart
So this is where we really start
Music is a shout of foregone conclusions
As long as music plays it?s part
    Good good part

    8. City of Love- A slow jungle-like drum beat starts off this song; keyboards join in? then the drums take a heavier sound. Easy to get into; this song will make you start head-nodding in time to the rhythm! This song has a real heavier bite as far as the music goes; it?s almost on par with most metal bands of the 80?s! The solos are smooth as well!

Good timing has its good price
One trick and you?re stuck with the dice
    How they jive and jingle
    When you?re their sacrifice

    Fast as Lightning
Go- go get high- he?s looking good
Once bitten twice shy (*Great White, anyone? Laughs*)
    No woman no cry
    No woman don?t cry

    9. Hearts- This song is a slower song? a love song? but the keyboards and guitars speed up the rhythm too much, I think. Although the blend of the vocals and the music is very strong, I just think it?s too hard to enjoy this song as much as if they wrote it a bit slower. The drums are very nice, however? setting a hard bite into the music; setting the rhythm.

    One?s heart for love
    One?s for giving
    Two hearts are better
    Than one
    I hearing it
    I living it
    I believe in it
    Two hearts are better
    Than one

YES has a very versatile style of rock? I am impressed with their musical capabilities and abilities! Though the music is a bit dated now; I still enjoy puttin? this CD in the player even if just to listen to Owner of a Lonely Heart and It Can Happen!
