Mathematical Problem Solving by ALAN H. SCHOENFELD

    pdf | 2.65 MB | English | Isbn:9780126288704 | Author: ALAN H. SCHOENFELD | Year: 2014

    Description:

This book is addressed to people with research interests in the nature of mathematical thinking at any level, topeople with an interest in "higher-order thinking skills" in any domain, and to all mathematics teachers. The focal point of the book is a framework for the analysis of complex problem-solving behavior. That framework is presented in Part One, which consists of Chapters 1 through 5. It describes four qualitatively different aspects of complex intellectual activity: cognitive resources, the body of facts and procedures at one's disposal; heuristics, "rules of thumb" for making progress in difficult situations; control, having to do with the efficiency with which individuals utilize the knowledge at their disposal; and belief systems, one's perspectives regarding the nature of a discipline and how one goes about working in it. Part Two of the book, consisting of Chapters 6 through 10, presents a series of empirical studies that flesh out the analytical framework. These studies document the ways that competent problem solvers make the most of the knowledge at their disposal. They include observations of students, indicating some typical roadblocks to success. Data taken from students before and after a series of intensive problem-solving courses document the kinds of learning that can result from carefully designed instruction. Finally, observations made in typical high school classrooms serve to indicate some of the sources of students' (often counterproductive) mathematical behavior.

Sesame, Soy, Spice by Remy Morimoto Park

    epub | 189.5 MB | English | Isbn:9780063311022 | Author: Remy Morimoto Park | Year: 2024

    Description:

The social media star, recipe developer, and health blogger behind Veggiekins shares delicious vegan and gluten-free meals, influenced by her pan-Asian background and her personal journey to wellness.
Growing up in an international family, Remy Morimoto Park ate food from her parents' Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese cultures; other family members' French and Brazilian origins; and close friends' Thai homes. When she began struggling with an eating disorder and problems with addiction, she turned to a vegan and gluten-free lifestyle and found herself drifting away from her family meals and childhood comfort foods, locking on to the cucumber sticks, grilled chicken salads, and bean burgers that dominate the popular diet and vegan spaces. But Remy's rejection of meat dishes, and frustration in finding vegan meals while eating out at Asian restaurants, put a stress on potential ways to connect with family members and her heritage.
Turning her old comfort foods into inspiration for new dishes, she was able to strengthen her relationship with food, a crucial part in her recovery from addiction and disordered eating. It also gave her opportunities to explore traditional vegan diets in her cultures, including Korean temple food, Japanese Buddhist cuisine, and Taiwanese faux meats, and she found that the compassionate lifestyle that is a part of veganism was a pillar in her recovery.
In this beautiful, inspirational book, Remy offers elegant, easy-to-make plant-based takes on international and Asian-ish dishes such as:[*]Smoky Maple Tempeh Bacon[*]Green Garden Soba Noodle Salad[*]Taiwanese Five Spice Brussel Sprouts[*]Spicy Peanut Ramen[*]Thai Basil Tempeh[*]Japanese Kare, with Popcorn Tofu[*]Pesto P?o de Queijo/Brazilian Cheezy Bread[*]Miso Caramel Cr?me Brul?e[*]Sesame Bark Chocolate
From breakfast to dessert and every meal in between, Sesame, Soy, Spice provides standout vegan and gluten-free recipes alongside thoughtful reflections on family, culture, and wellness. As Remy says, the recipes in this book are love letters to her family members, to the countries she's lived in, and to her teenage self-the one who thought she had to reject the food of her culture to live authentically for herself.

Swift the Storm, Fierce the Flame by Meg Long

    epub | 3.56 MB | English | Isbn:9781250785121 | Author: Meg Long | Year: 2023

    Description:

A girl hellbent on finding the friend she lost. A planet on the brink of total destruction. Only one way to find answers amidst the chaos: team up with a traitor to stage a revolution, in Meg Long's Swift the Storm, Fierce the Flame.

After a mission gone awry two years ago, Remy Castell has been desperately searching across worlds to find the friend she failed to save-the friend who changed her life by helping her overcome the brainwashing she was subjected to as a genetically engineered corporate agent.
Since then, she's been chasing the only lead she has: fellow genopath Kiran Lore, the same secretive ex-squadmate who left her for dead when she compromised that mission. She nearly caught up to him on Tundar before joining the infamous sled race alongside outcast Sena and her wolf companion Iska. Now, all three of them have tracked Kiran back to Maraas, the jungle planet where Remy lost everything. But nothing on Maraas is how it was two years ago. Syndicates and scavvers alike are now trying to overthrow a megalomaniac corpo director, which Remy wants nothing to do with; fighting against corpos is as useless as trying to stay dry in the middle of the giant hellstorm that encircles the planet. But the storm-and the rebellion-are growing stronger by the minute.
When Remy finds Kiran, he doesn't run away like she expects. Instead, he offers her a deal: help with the revolution and he'll reunite her with her friend. But can she really trust the boy who betrayed her once before? With the entire planet on the edge of all-out war, Remy will have to decide just how far she's willing to go to save one girl before the impending storm drowns them all.

    Solitary Bees by Ted Benton

    epub | 283.52 MB | English | Isbn:9780008304553 | Author: Ted Benton | Year: 2023

    Description:

A completely up-to-date introduction to the most common group of bees in Britain. Bees, for most people, mean honey or bumble bees, but in fact these social species make up only a small proportion of the species that live in Britain. Open your eyes to the so-called 'solitary' bees, and discover a wonderfully diverse population - miners, leafcutters, carpenters and masons - many of which can be found in your own back garden. Solitary bees come in a variety of colours and sizes, with some as large as bumblebees and some only a few millimetres long, and many are key pollinators for our crops and wildflowers. This comprehensive book will tell the story of how these bees live, reproduce and thrive: discover the numerous strategies used by male bees to find females and persuade them to mate; follow the females as they build their nests - or in the case of 'cuckoo' species, sneak into the nests of their neighbours - and watch as the new generation appears. Explore the interactions between flowering plants and their bee visitors, asking what the plants get from the relationship, as well as how the bees select the plants they visit, and the ingenuity required to extract pollen, nectar and other rewards. Finally, learn places where bees flourish and what can be done to encourage them and ensure they continue to pollinate our flowers and crops. Drawing on all the latest research as well as the authors' own observations in the field, this timely New Naturalist gives a wonderful insight into the complicated lives of solitary bees, and the complexity of the behaviour and ecology of this remarkable group of insects.

The Fairytale Life of Dorothy Gale by Virginia Kantra

    epub | 3.73 MB | English | Isbn:9780593547717 | Author: Virginia Kantra | Year: 2023

    Description:

A woman learns to follow her own road in this heartwarming novel inspired by The Wizard of Oz by New York Times bestselling author Virginia Kantra.

Dorothy "Dee" Gale is searching for a place to belong. After their globe-trotting mother's death, Dee and her sister Toni settled with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em in Kansas, where Dee attends graduate school. But when Dee's relationship with a faculty member, a bestselling novelist, ends in heartbreak and humiliation, she's caught in a tornado of negative publicity. Unable to face her colleagues-or her former lover-Dee applies to the writing program at Trinity College Dublin.

Dee's journey to Ireland leads her to new companions: seemingly brainless Sam Clery-who dropped out of college and now runs a newsagent's shop-is charming and hot, in a dissolute, Irish poet kind of way; allegedly heartless Tim Woodman-who stiffly refused to take back his ex-fianc?e-seems stuck in his past; and fiercely loyal Reeti Kaur, who longs for the courage to tell her parents she wants to teach underprivileged girls rather than work in the family business.

In a year of opportunities and changes, love and loss, Dee is mentored by powerful women in the writing program, challenging her to see herself and her work with new eyes. With her friends, Dee finds the confidence to confront her biggest fears-including her intimidating graduate advisor, who may not be so wicked after all.

Faced with a choice with far-reaching consequences, Dee must apply the lessons she's learned along the way about making a family, finding a home...and recognizing the power that's been inside her all along.

    Description:

An inspiring and entertaining collection of unforgettable true stories about finding unexpected beauty in life's transitions-from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Elizabeth Gilbert, Quiara Alegr?a Hudes, and many more.

"The Moth taught me how to be vulnerable, how to take my time, and how to listen to someone else's story and share in their moments of triumph, laughter, or, yes, sometimes embarrassment with an open heart."-Mike Birbiglia, from the Foreword

An international rescue mission for Paddington Bear. A family matriarch running numbers in Detroit. An epic Lucha Libre showdown in Mexico City. A beach vacation spent looking for the Kennedys. Storytellers from around the world share times they found real beauty in the moments when their lives changed forever-for better or for worse.

Carefully selected by the creative minds at The Moth and adapted to the page to preserve the raw energy of stories told live, on stage, and without notes, A Point of Beauty features voices familiar and new. This collection offers a shared message: If we look closely enough, we can find power in strengthening frayed bonds but also in having the courage to walk away from things that no longer feed our spirit. Through these storytellers' passion and their hope, they teach us all about what's worth holding on to: our relationships with those we love the most, our understanding of ourselves, and-of course-gathering together to tell and listen to our stories.

The Last Counterfeiter by Jason Kersten

    epub | 2.91 MB | English | Isbn:9781635768411 | Author: Jason Kersten | Year: 2024

    Description:

The true story of the mastermind counterfeiter who forged millions, replicated the impossible 1996 note, dodged the Secret Service, but couldn't escape the pain of his broken family. When Art Williams Jr.'s father abandoned the family and his bipolar mother lost her mind, a life of crime in Chicago quickly claimed him. Parking meter theft led to robbing drug dealers before Art fatefully met a man nicknamed DaVinci who taught him the skill of counterfeiting money. After just a few years, Art would print millions of counterfeit bills, selling them to criminal organizations, all while trying to raise a family on the side.

Art's greatest challenge arose when the Treasury Department released the 1996 note, the most intricate and secure bill ever created. Between painstakingly perfecting a new hundred-dollar bill to bypass the naked eye and security measures alike, Art was slipping by the Secret Service hunting him, and searching for his long-lost father, a path that ultimately led to his undoing.
Prison may have been the end, especially as Art Jr. found himself behind bars sharing a cell with his own son, but with the same creativity and ambition that locked him up, Art reinvented himself as a professional artist. Art's unbelievable journey extends beyond a life of crime to one of second chances, healing family wounds, and ultimately, triumph.
Fans of Catch Me If You Can and The Art Thief won't want to miss this unforgettable caper story.

The Sexual Politics of Empire by Erin L. Durban

    epub | 1.96 MB | English | | Author: Erin L. Durban | Year: 2022

    Description:

Evangelical Christians and members of the global LGBTQI human rights movement have vied for influence in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. Each side accuses the other of serving foreign interests. Yet each proposes future foreign interventions on behalf of their respective causes despite the country's traumatic past with European colonialism and American imperialism. As Erin L. Durban shows, two discourses dominate discussions of intervention. One maintains imperialist notions of a backward Haiti so riddled with cultural deficiencies that foreign supervision is necessary to overcome Haitians' resistance to progress. The other sees Haiti as a modern but failed state that exists only through its capacity for violence, including homophobia. In the context of these competing claims, Durban explores the creative ways that same-sex desiring and gender creative Haitians contend with anti-LGBTQI violence and ongoing foreign intervention. Compelling and thought-provoking, The Sexual Politics of Empire examines LGBTQI life in contemporary Haiti against the backdrop of American imperialism and intervention.
