Dokken CD- "Back for the Attack"

**This is not my review, however I agree with each and EVERY single word!!!**

I've heard stories from many people saying this was the first Compact Disc that they owned. "Back for the attack" sort of ushered in the era of 50-Minute plus albums. But my copy of 'Back for the Attack" was on vinyl (Album, LP, Whatever you may call it.) The cover is on my list of favorites, the classic logo over a detailed painting.

"Back for the Attack" is arguably Dokken's finest hour. Never again would they reach such staggering heights. George Lynch put on a guitar show for the ages, he uses every trick in his arsenal on this album.

The melodies are incredible. Don Dokken was an extremely skilled vocalist. Starting song "Kiss of death" contains some steady riffing. The guitar and chorus of "Prisoner" blend perfectly. The lyrics of "Night by night" describe a dialog with a girl - "Baby, can't you see we live it night by night, it's just you and me". "Standing in the shadows" features a creative distorted lick that only intensifies once the Drums and Bass kick in. "Heaven Sent" is a great atmospheric track. As far as guitar instrumentals go "Mr. Scary" should be in the quality department with "Eruption". Masterful shredding from Guitar guru George Lynch.

"So many tears" is engaging with strong lyrics "There's only so many tears you can cry/There's only so many ways you can say good-bye". The opening chords of "Burning like a flame" are engaging. The chorus goes "Our love that's burning, burning like a flame/Don't you know that it's Our love that's never gonna change/Every time I touch you, it just makes me go insane/Our love that's burning like a flame". The guitar solo is nice too.

TRACK LIST:

1. Kiss of Death
2. Prisoner
3. Night by Night
4. Standing in the Shadows
5. Heaven Sent
6. Mr. Scary
7. So Many Tears
8. Burning Like a Flame
9. Lost Behind the Wall
10. Stop Fighting Love
11. Cry of the Gypsy
12. Sleepless Nights
13. Dream Warriors

Rainbow

**This is not my review**

Pros
At their peak, this band was as good as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and others.

Cons
Glover and Blackmore toned down the band's sound on the later albums.

The Bottom Line
This showcases Rainbow's work and proves how underrated they really are.

Full Review
I am always amazed when self professed hard rock fans mention some of the greatest bands of the 70's but overlook Rainbow. After all, these guys were one of the most popular hard rock bands in the world for almost ten years. However, through the years people seem to have forgotten them while still paying homage to bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.

For those unfamiliar with the band, Rainbow basically evolved from the legendary band Deep Purple. The band was the idea of Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and dare I say at their peak blew Purple out of the water (that they lacked the overall consistency and staying power.) When Rainbow was formed, it stemmed from the fact that Blackmore had grown frustrated with Purple's musical direction.

In August 1975 "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" was released and what an album it was. The band featured legendary singer Ronnie James Dio on vocals and began Blackmore's fascination with things considered medieval (a subject Dio has often touched upon in his solo career). The early work of Rainbow is considered the band's best work.

Unfortunately, the original lineup did not last and within just a few years, members began to come and go and the band's work became a mixed bag. However, some of their lesser known work is quite impressive.

The "Very Best of Rainbow" covers all areas of the band's career including highlights from the later years. Rainbow's constant lineup changes makes this an interesting listen due to the various styles and in particular the various vocalists who have been a part of Blackmore's band.

The following is a listing of the tracks, with my thoughts on each. I rated each song on a scale of one to ten.

Man on the Silver Mountain-(10)the album starts with probably the band's most remembered track. This one is still occassionally heard on classic rock radio. The song is killer with Blackmore's trademark guitar work and Dio's soaring voices. It also marks the beginning of Blackmore's medieval fascination.

Catch the Rainbow-(9)this track comes from Ritchie Blackmore's Raiinbow (the band's first release) and showcases the darker side of the band. While the song is somewhat catchy, the sound is slightly thicker than "Man On The Silver Mountain. The beauty of this song is the excellent bass playing of Craig Gruber, who was more well-known for his work with another Dio led outfit called Elf.

Starstruck-(10)-after having tremendous success with their debut release, Rainbow decided to return the following year with a heavier sound. In some regards they seemed to be shying away from the Deep Purple sound and going for more of a Sabbath sound. This track is probably the best on the album. It features the Munic Philharmonic Orchestra giving it a fuller sound. Many hard bands have tried this formula but Rainbow has to be considered pioneers. Another soung dealing with sword and sorecery. This may be their best song.

Kill the King-(10)-by 1977, the original band began to fall apart despite having two hugely successful albums. The band added bassist Bob Daisley (who had done many things in his career include write most of the classic Ozzy Osbourne solo songs) and keyboardist David Stone. Despite the changes, this is still considered one of the band's finest songs coming from the album "Long Live Rock N'Roll. The sound isn't quite as heavy, but in many ways is a companion piece to the "Rainbow Rising" album. This hard rocker is a favorite among fans and had actually been featured in the band's live show from a year before. It did breed controversy with its lyrics.

Long Live Rock N'Roll(9)-the title track actually is a little different in sound to some of the other tracks on the album. Slightly more catchy, this song sounds like it good have came from their debut release.

Gates of Babylon(9)-having had success with "Stargazer," Blackmore decided to us a string accompainment once again. The song while not as compelling showed how truly gifted a songwriter that Blackmore is. This features some of his most emotional guitar work. Some would argue this was their last truly classic song, though I disagree. {Itch agrees with the last sentence}

Since You Been Gone-(8)-In 1979, Ronnie James Dio left Rainbow due to frustration that Blackmore had basically taken over the band and was writing most of the material. Dio would go on to record a couple of albums with Sabbath in the early 80's and then form his own band (he still rocks to this day). This track marked the debut of vocalist Graham Bonnet. Bonnet was an interesting choice because his vocals while quite good, weren't anywhere as powerful as Dio's. However, the key to understand this track and the overall album is the fact that Roger Glover joined the band on bass to help Blackmore with the songwriting. Glover also produced the album and decided to take the band in a more commercial direction. This proved in some ways to be a wise decision as this track cracked the UK Top 10. However, it was a slower song and left many of the older fans disgusted.

All Night Long (7)-this song while slightly more rocking in my opinion still wasn't the heavy rock fans had grown to expect from Rainbow. However, this one also cracked the Top 10 and showcased the talents of new keyboardist Don Airey.

I Surrender-(8)In 1981, Blackmore decided he wanted another singer and hired a young American named Joe Lynn Turner. In addition, drummer Cozy Powell who had played for the band for five years left and was replaced by Bobby Rondinelli Rainbow definitely had some great musicians through the years). The title of the album was "Difficult to Cure" and in some regards this release showed Rainbow at their most diverse. This track while rocking featured Turner's killer vocals and in some regards was less commercial than the previous album. This song was their biggest hit to date.

Can't Happen Here (9)-the followup to "I Surrender" was a killer track that showed more texture in the song playing. Blackmore sounded like he really was enjoying himself again.

Jealous Lover (10)-this was an interesting choice for this album. This track which is hard rocking actually was never released as a single but is considered a standout to many fans. It is good to hear the band making good music again.

Stone Cold (8)-In 1982, Blackmore began to notice a chance in rock music. The disco era was thankfully beginning to disappear and bands with a more commercial sound were becomng successful. Blackmore realized that he needed to do the same to return to his former glory and put out "Straight Between the Eyes." As a whole, however, the album was a let down and contained few straight out rockers. This song was a hit for the band but would be defined as more of a midtempo song. It does have a catchy chorus and sounds just enough like Rainbow to make it a good song.

Power(9)-this classic song was a throwback to the older days and features some of Blackmore's most impressive guitar work in years. A heavy song that had long time fans hoping Rainbow would return to this sound.

Can't Let You Go(6)-this track comes from the band's final release, "Difficult to Cure." Unfortunately, the countless lineup changes and changing of styles seemed to have caught up with the band. This track, while melodic is one of the weak points of an otherwise great compliation. Blackmore sounds bored on this one and in some regards I feel the same way when listening to this Rainbow-lite track.

Street of Dreams (8)-this track was a highlight from an otherwise mediocre album. This song features the excellent vocals of Joe Lynn Turner and is quite catchy. It probably should have been a bigger hit for the band, but Blackmore's guitar work seems too toned down on this one. {For Itch this is MY MOST FAVORITE Rainbow song}

"The Very Best of Rainbow" clearly shows a band that knew how to rock. While their sound get softer through the years, there is enough material here to satisfy any fan of real classic rock.

**A review that I agree with**

Cinderella burst on to the music scene in 1986 with Night Songs. They had been discovered by Bon Jovi and they have a similar "light metal" sound. While Bon Jovi had his moments, Cinderella was a more consistent band which appealed to an audience used to listening to standard hard-rock.

Night Songs may not be the best album in their catalog, but it does have a certain charm and includes many of the bands better known songs. Many debut albums normally have one song that propels the band on to greatness and multi-album deals but the rest of the album normally falls flat. That isn't really the case here fortunately. Cinderella knew what they were doing on the road and in the studio and they really let it all hang out here.

Night Songs is really Tom Kiefer's baby. He wrote all the songs and does all the vocals and plays guitar on every track, plus a little piano. Also on guitar is Jeff LaBar who happen's to be a pretty good lead guitarist. He's definitely studied his Aerosmith. Fred Coury is a great drummer and while he doesn't stand out too much, he really lays down the beat well. Rounding out the group is Eric Brittingham on bass.

Track By Track discussion
Night Songs
The title track opens the album and kind of gives a false impression of what to expect from Cinderella. It's a really dark tune with a slow grinding riff, almost dirge-like. This is a cool tune and but not what Cinderella normally put out.

Shake Me
Here we go! This is the Cinderella most people know. It's an uptempo rocker about rock 'n' roll and sex. A lot of fun with just the right amount of sleaze. Tom Keifer really has a great voice for this trashy 80s stuff. He's got a very Stephen Tyler-esque way of singing that just sounds wonderful. I've heard that singing in his falsetto really hurt his voice and trying to imitate him on this song, it's easy to see why.

Nobody's Fool
Cinderella could rock, but they could also slow it down and do some great power ballads. Nobody's Fool is their perfect show case for their talents and it is just as good today as it was 14 years ago. The lyrics here are great and the I'm not your fool, nobody's fool chorus is instantly singable. An 80s classic in every way.

Nothin' For Nothin'
Around this song, the album starts to slip a little. While not bad, this rocker isn't very memorable. Tom Keifer can really sell a song with his vocals though and he does manage to salvage this one from the "why did it make the record" pile.

Once Around The Ride
Well he can't salvage them all. This track doesn't have very many redeeming qualities and kind of falls flat. You can't win 'em all I guess.

Hell On Wheels
It's about this point in the album where people start saying "I've heard all this before. Where's the promise that this album showed in the first 3 tracks?" I'm kinda wondering that myself. While not terrible it's really just filler and you know it.

Somebody Save Me
Here we are again! Somebody Save Me is a great hard rockin' tune with pretty nasty sounding vocals and a mean riff. Cinderella sounds angry here and it works really well. For some reason their darker material always appealed to me a lot more than the lighter fluff, Somebody save me indeed! This song is great all the way around.

In From The Outside
Tom Keifer actually has a really cool voice when he's not singing in falsetto. He puts it to work here at the start of the song. It's gives an interesting feel to the song before he turns on his "Cinderella" voice. This song isn't bad but sounds a lot like Aerosmith to me.

Push, Push
Pure Cinderella sleaze. Not all that great a song, but fun to listen to. I think it got a little airplay, but it certainly wasn't a big hit.

Back Home Again
I really like the closing track, but it's not considered one of their best. It's a lot fun though and just has a great vibe. It's a fast paced hard rocker that which is in adequate closer for a good (if not great) debut album.

Cinderella sounds great here and only improved on their next release Long Cold Winter. They are definitely a hair band in every sense of the word (check out the cover of this album!) and the music really reflects that. This disc is a lot of fun and recommended for any fan of sleazy blues-rock and the 80s. Itch agree's!

Yes 90125

One of the greatest rock bands ever!! The talent in this band has not been surpassed since the early 90's! When I listen to current music today and then I listen to this band . . . I really do scratch my head! Yes was such a progressive band compared to the shit that's out today! In my opinion there was a time when bands wrote music with the idea of creating something beautiful. Todays bands are in it for the money and you can hear it in their music!! If you want to purchase an album from the past that was really about music this is a MUST Buy!!

**This is not my review but I agree totaly**

Ok, this is off the beaten metal track for the Iceman... but YES does have some excellent music and grooves! YES was one of the tapes that my father had in the car; I enjoyed the music as much as he did! (*Whoa. I liked my DAD's music??? No freakin' way!*)

Anyway... onto the music! It's a softer rock, with some solid lyrics! Definitely not your style of rock nowadays! But it is enjoyable to listen to. =)

The band members are as follows:

Jon Anderson- vocals **Uniqur Voice**
Chris Squire- Bass and backing vocals **Top 3 Bassist's of all time**
Trevor Rabin- Guitars, keyboards, backing vocals
Alan White- Drums, percussions, backing vocals
Tony Kaye- keyboards

The music on this CD has a lot more of the horns; the keyboards... which they blended in especially well... it reminds me a little bit of Asia! Speaking of which... I have GOT to find a copy of Asia's CD!

1. Owner of a Lonely Heart- This song starts off the CD; it is also one of their best!! The drums start this one off fast and strong; and the guitars join in... with a simple yet very catchy groove! Later in the song, the guitar and keyboards solo is almost trancelike... so soft and melodious... then the chorus breaks in! The vocals are solid, and the overall music of this track will get you dancing a little bit in your seat as you sing along....

After my own indecision
They confused me so
My love said never question your will at all
In the end you've got to go
Look before you leap
And don't you hesitate at all-no no

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
Much better than...
Owner of a broken heart...

2. Hold On- The drums are quite nice on this track; but I think it's the vocals that's the strength of this song! The music otherwise, could've blended better with the vocals though.... still a solid cut however!

Hold on- hold on
Wait! Take your time
Think it through
Yes! I can make it through

3. It Can Happen- Now, this song is EXCELLENT! The lyrics are well written; the vocals are such that you would find yourself singing along with it as soon as the song starts! The music is quite melodious... the drums are soft, yet matches the rest of the music very well. Just a song you'd want to listen to over and over again....

You can mend the wires
You can feed your soul apart
You can touch your life
You can bring your soul alive
It can happen to you
It can happen to me
It can happen to everyone eventually

4. Changes- This song starts off great!! The keyboards and the drums are jammin'... almost makes you wait and listen some more... then they fade out and the keyboards are left once again, to build back up again.... the music itself changes from time to time... making you wonder, almost, how the song is going to end! But honestly, it is terrific to listen to! The lyrics deal with falling out of love; making for a sad song. But the music is a little too upbeat for the lyrics.. that's my only beef with this cut...

I look into the mirror
I see no happiness
All the warmth I gave you
Has turned to emptiness
The love we had has fallen
The love we used to share
You?ve left me believing
In love that wasn?t there

5. Cinema- An instrumental cut on the CD? you can hear the keyboards taking over on this one? and the percussions too? this was recorded live in London; and it?s pretty good, but I usually just skip over this one. **Itch Doesn't skip over this one**

6. Leave It- The singing starts off this song without any music; reminds me of Queen?s Bohemian Rhapsody? until the drums starts a slow rhythm? and the strings join in. The lyrics really don?t make sense to me, however. This is a decent song; I can usually leave it though.

Get home you?re not alone
You just broke out of the danger zone
Be there to show your face
On another dreamy day

7. Our Song- I really like how YES melded the keyboards and the strings on this song! I enjoy listening to this cut very much? The drums are rock-solid, and the singing is smooth and flowing. The song?s about listening to a song that just makes you listen and enjoy the music for itself; not for any kind of message at all, just pure enjoyment. The keyboards are quite interesting, near the end of the song, you can hear the higher notes slipping it?s way into your ears?.

Touching of the healing heart
So this is where we really start
Music is a shout of foregone conclusions
As long as music plays it?s part
Good good part

8. City of Love- A slow jungle-like drum beat starts off this song; keyboards join in? then the drums take a heavier sound. Easy to get into; this song will make you start head-nodding in time to the rhythm! This song has a real heavier bite as far as the music goes; it?s almost on par with most metal bands of the 80?s! The solos are smooth as well!

Good timing has its good price
One trick and you?re stuck with the dice
How they jive and jingle
When you?re their sacrifice

Fast as Lightning
Go- go get high- he?s looking good
Once bitten twice shy (*Great White, anyone? Laughs*)
No woman no cry
No woman don?t cry

9. Hearts- This song is a slower song? a love song? but the keyboards and guitars speed up the rhythm too much, I think. Although the blend of the vocals and the music is very strong, I just think it?s too hard to enjoy this song as much as if they wrote it a bit slower. The drums are very nice, however? setting a hard bite into the music; setting the rhythm.

One?s heart for love
One?s for giving
Two hearts are better
Than one
I hearing it
I living it
I believe in it
Two hearts are better
Than one

YES has a very versatile style of rock? I am impressed with their musical capabilities and abilities! Though the music is a bit dated now; I still enjoy puttin? this CD in the player even if just to listen to Owner of a Lonely Heart and It Can Happen!

Sting Sacred Love

**This is not my review . . . I agree with it though**

Sting.(Reflective Pause) What can we write about Sting that hasn?t already been written? You all know his history, founder of one of the biggest rock bands in history, the Police, and left them to pursue his immensely successful solo career in order to explore, experiment and integrate all forms of music into his own eclectic mix of albums and hugely successful songs.

Gordon Sumner?s singing and writing style have won him many accolades and recognition from his contemporaries and most important from his fans worldwide. He isn?t afraid to wander off into unknown musical waters and somehow fuse the influences into his own creations. A perfect example of this is Desert Rose, in his previous LP, where he introduced an oriental song in pop sensibility, especially made effective by the guest singer Cheb Mami whose Arabic singing style made Desert Rose all the more spectacular and authentic. Sting follows on with this winning formula by including not only worldbeat influences into his new LP, but also by experimenting with electronic beats and techno sensibilities in order to try to woo in a newer generation of listeners. Although an immensely solid piece of work, Sacred Love, which includes many influences, feels like Sting is running from one place to another, from the rock influenced This War via the techno-flamenco-oriental Send Your Love to a typical Sting-style song in Sacred Love. Not that this is bad in any way, in fact it shows that Sting, although already a living musical legend, is to this day always prepared to step away from his comfort zone, but this approach gives the impression of a certain lack of focus. Nevertheless, this is Sting we are talking about, therefore Sacred Love delivers a very listenable and varied collection of songs, all performed outstandingly and all have an air of intellectual craftsmanship. When one song lacks focus usually the following picks up in style and class making up for the shortcomings.

Probably encouraged by Desert Rose, I guess I should also mention that there are three guest appearances in this LP, namely by Vicente Amigo, Mary J. Blige and Anoushka Shankar, of which I shall give a wider description in my traditional song breakdown below. Isn?t it exciting? :)

So, the moment you?ve all been waiting for, where I describe the songs to the best of my ability so that one would get an audio impression without listening to the songs themselves. Here it is: [insert drum role clip]

1. Inside - A slight orchestra build up, featuring acoustic guitar, a sitar-like instrument, and stringed background introduces us into Sting?s with bare sounding tight drum and bass background and an acoustic guitar in the foreground playing chords string by string. This pattern builds as strings and synthesizers are layered in the bridge during the bridge that lead to a full crescendo of a violin orchestra in the chorus section. The vocals are typical of Sting with what I call linear singing, akin to the verse in if I ever lose my faith in you while the orchestration at times is reminiscent of mad about you.

2. Send your Love(Featuring Vicente Amigo) - Starting off with a flamenco guitar introduction, a very frenzied and masterfully performed small piece by Vincente Amigo, yet it seems out of place as Sting starts of with very dark sounding vocals leading the melody as he is only supported by an electronic rhythm featuring mainly high-hat and bass. Each chorus features an oriental sounding phrase which is transposed through verse in the latter part of the song. The rhythm is mainly dance/disco oriented while we only get a hint of the flamenco guitar in the remaining parts of the song. This song is probably directed at the younger generation as it is it has a very modern beat, but some how it doesn?t suit Sting?s style. Apart from the fact that the guest Vincente Amigo shows off his flare in the intro it seems that there is some injustice in not allowing him to have a spotlight in the body of the song too, after all he is credited as a guest star. Although this song has been released as a single I believe it is one of the weaker ones and should really be regarded as an experiment rather than a complete song.

3. Whenever I Say your Name (Featuring Mary J. Blige) - A rhythmic song that starts off with Sting?s sultry vocals who is accompanied by Mary J. Blige. The mood shifts from low key via vocal interchanges between the two singers to slowly build up, accompanied by the backing music, again to reach a crescendo in the chorus. Although Sting is not the best of singers he holds his own to the excellent vocal performance of the soulful Mary J. Blige, especially with his excellent high notes as opposed to the bluesy and gospel like delivery by Ms. Blige. Meanwhile back to the song, the last part of it turns into a funky little number where both singers interact with each other?s styles. **In my opinion, one of Stings 5 best songs!!**

4. Dead Man?s Rope Finally a typical melancholic low key song as we are used to hearing from Sting. Yet again, a the so-called linear signing style take centre stage in this forlorn and uninspiring song.

5. Never Coming Home An electronic beat starts and then pauses in order to allow Sting to deliver his vocal melody line. This again is mainly an electro-pop song with Sting vocals and in my view is surprisingly a much more successful attempt than Send your Love, as it has melody and some typical Sting signatures. **A Masterfully written song**

6. Stolen Car A low-key melancholic, typical Sting with sytnhesizer and a slight electronic background beat which becomes more audible in the second part of the verse. The chorus is a wonderful melodious tune and typical of sing represents the crescendo featuring interlaced vocals with the main melody line sung by Sting and vague background vocals repeat certain parts in an unhurried fashion.

7. Forget About the Future A slow jazz/blues influenced song number. It?s nice to see Sting deliver such a moody little number with a nice pop-jazzy feel to it and is a nice turn from all those disco-focused songs. The drum rhythm is predominantly electronic sounding however but the rest of the instruments are natural sounding especially the clean guitar sound. A nice touch in about 3/4 of song is when a section of the song suddenly transforms into a vintage record sounding with trumpets and trombones along with the scratches and noise emulating a vintage turntable. The song returns to full clarity along with a trumpet and trombone section which recurs until the end of the song. Hardly without a stop comes the next song

8. This War A drum fill leads us directly into a hard rocking number (ok if its not heavy enough for you a rock number). As it is in the same key as the song preceding, it almost feels like a more solid and rocking continuation. As a predominant rock fan myself I must say that I was surprised by this infectious song, my only qualm could be perhaps that the distortion is not concise enough and fells like it been played through via an inadequately setup amp.

9. The Book of Life (Featuring Anoushka Shankar) - Almost 180 degree turn in musical styles with this oriental/Indian background. A wonderful slow song featuring the instrumentation by Ravi Shankar?s daughter which gives freshness especially by the Sitars and other oriental instruments.

10. Sacred Love Finally we arrive at perhaps the best song of the Album. It is vintage Sting at his vintage best. Regardless of some shortcoming in this album this song makes up for them with nuances of orchestration, variety of instruments, integrated oriental musical influences along with a rock, pop and at times funky sensibility. There?s an immensity which must be explored in this song that will require more than just several listens, the catchy chorus and excellent arrangement help a lot in the process of course.

There that wasn?t so hard was it? I wouldn?t go as far as saying that Sacred Love surpasses Brand New Day, nor would I dare in any way or form say that it is anywhere near the legendary Dream of the Blue Turtles or Ten Summoner?s Tales but it does stand on its own merit especially with several exceptional songs that compensate for a few experimentations in the dance category.

Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales

Perhaps one of Stings best CD's ever! Frankly put, I cannot think of a better "wordsmith" than Sting! Below are the lyrics to my favorite song on this cd!

"Seven Days"

"Seven Days" was all she wrote
A kind of ultimatum note
She gave to me, she gave to me
When I thought the field had cleared
It seems another suit appeared
To challenge me, woe is me
Though I hate to make a choice
My options are decreasing mostly rapidly
Well we'll see
I don't think she'd bluff this time
I really have to make her mine
It's plain to see
It's him or me

Monday, I could wait till Tuesday
If I make up my mind
Wednesday would be fine, Thursday's on my mind
Friday'd give me time, Saturday could wait
But Sunday'd be too late

The fact that he's six feet ten
Might instill fear in other men
But not in me, The Mighty Flea (flee?)
Ask if I am mouse or man
The mirror squeaked, away I ran
He'll murder me in time for his tea
Does it bother me at all
My rival is Neanderthal, it makes me think
Perhaps I need a drink
IQ is no problem here
We won't be playing Scrabble for her hand I fear
I need that beer

Monday, I could wait till Tuesday
If I make up my mind
Wednesday would be fine, Thursday's on my mind
Friday'd give me time, Saturday could wait
But Sunday'd be too late

Seven days will quickly go
The fact remains, I love her so
Seven days, so many ways
But I can't run away

Monday, I could wait till Tuesday
If I make up my mind
Wednesday would be fine, Thursday's on my mind
Friday'd give me time, Saturday could wait
But Sunday'd be too late
Do I have to tell a story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met
It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet

Van Halen - "Women and Children First"

The second song called Everyone wants some says it better than I could!! If you've been on this site for more than a day, you'll know that this phrase fits me to a tee!!!

I like the way the line runs up the back of the stockings.
Ive always liked those kind of high heels too. you know, i...
No no no no, dont take em off, dont take... leave em on, leave em on.
Yeah, thats it, a little more to the right, a little more....
Evrybody wants some.
I want some too.
**and if you turn up the volumn at the end you'll here Dave sing**
Look I'll pay ya' for them! What the fuck

**Not my review but Itch agrees!!**

In 1979, Hard Rock party band, Van Halen had released their second album, Van Halen II, and the band had gained some notoriety with a top 20 single named Dance the Night Away. So on the heels of a successful single, and now with the release of Women and Children First 1979, the band were headlining their first tour to support this album. Women and Children First had reached #6 in the US Billboard Pop Album Charts, and Van Halen were now a Top 10 act. After this tour, Van Halen in the charts and the buzz of the great show the band puts on, the path was clear for VH to claim the title for the best American rock band, which they would just maybe two years later with their 1982 release Diver Down.

And the Cradle Will Rock... opens the album with it's Big Rock swagger and classic title that assures the fans that Van Halen is back with the same formula, yet with a bigger and more confident sound than their previous album Van Halen II (1979), and it also points to the direction of their next album, Fair Warning (1981). Cradle was released as a single and had reached #55 in the US pop singles charts.
Everybody Wants Some, another classic title starts off with jungle drums from Alex, and monkey sounds from Roth. David and Eddie give each other room to spread their wings to do their thing during the verses. After David would sing a line of the verse over bass and drums, Eddie would bookend it with a dive-bomb or some incidental fretwork.

Some bluesy clean electric guitar work and vocalizing start off Fools which then breaks off into a quick yet sizzling guitar solo from Eddie. When the song really begins with its bluesy groove, it reminds one of ZZ Top's songs, maybe Cheap Sunglasses. This song is the longest on the album, just about reaching six minutes in length.
Romeo's Delight, like all the songs so far, give David Lee Roth some ample room to get his Diamond Dave persona across during the verses. It's great that the songs from Van Halen's catalogue could give Diamond Dave the space to shine, but at the same time Eddie Van Halen emerges as the guitar god that squelches all other attempts in comparison.

Tora! Tora! lasts under a minute long, and the first 25 seconds sound like backwards guitar noises that when played forward sound like an engine revving. The last 30 seconds is used only as an intro to Loss of Control. This is one of the fastest and oddball songs that Van Halen has recorded, and I love it. I do not hear the drawbacks that most fans and listeners complain about. The very things that they dislike, I find quite enjoyable. Such as the fact that there's only one verse in the song and they play it over and over, the chorus has David Lee Roth and bass player Michael Anthony sing ♫Loss of control, loss of control, loss of control♫ almost in a comical way, where Michael Anthony sings the harmony over Dave in a very high falsetto that I guess some people would find annoying.

Eddie introduces Take Your Whiskey Home with some great blues from an acoustic guitar, and David Lee Roth scatting along which has become common place on this LP. When the band jump in and the volume gets turned way up, it remains one of the best tracks VH had put to plastic.

Could This Be Magic? picks up right from where Whiskey left off. The song is made up of what sounds like at least two or three acoustic guitars and a lead vocal resembles something like Ray J. Johnson would lay down and the chorus sounds like a drunken sing-along which includes a female, the late Nicolette Larson, which just added to the song's authenticity.

In a Simple Rhyme sounds like it could have fit easily on their 1984 release 1984. The song makes a great closer to a perfect album. The music is loud, Dave's melody lines are wonderful, and Michael Anthony's bass even gets a moment to shine, not to mention the great harmonies from Michael, Dave and Eddie during the chorus and the lullaby section in the middle. After the song fades, the drums start up a quick instrumental that lasts only about fifteen seconds, supposedly the hidden track is named Growth. Eddie once said that the song was to be continued on their next album Fair Warning, but it never continued or completed as far as I know.

Despite the album only having nine songs, the length crosses the half-hour mark at 33:37 minutes long (according to Windows Media Player), which is sort of average for the late 70s. The album has a much harder edge than their 1979 release Van Halen II, which had a few songs that were very commercial including the single. Their next album, Fair Warning gets even heavier and remains the favorite among many VH fans, but Women and Children first is better in my opinion. I like the bluesy continuity that's present in almost all the songs, while they still maintain their hard rock party-like attitude thanks to David's attitude and those addicting melody lines.

Van Halen - "Fair Warning"

** Yea Itch agree with this review as well! Perhaps the best Van Halen release second to the 1st or . . . . maybe 5150. I guess this would make it the third best??? Damn' Eddie is tough on album!!"***

In 1981, Van Halen were on top of the world. They had released three top selling albums and were a huge concert attraction. In addition, Eddie Van Halen was receiving wide acclaim for his innovative guitar playing. At this point, a minor rift started to emerge between Eddie and lead singer David Lee Roth. As rock legend has it, Eddie wanted to get more experimental, but Roth would have none of it, telling Eddie to stick to being a guitar player. Accordingly this friction set the stage for what would become Van Halen's darkest-and best-album, Fair Warning.

Whether the legend is true or not, there's no denying that Fair Warning is a dark and very good album. But even though it is dark, it is not dark in the sense of the Velvet Underground. The whole album is energetic from beginning to end with some excellent guitar work from Eddie. Roth still has that famous David Lee Roth charisma and the rhythm section of Alex Van Halen (on drums) and Mike Anthony (on bass) puts in a good performance.

Fair Warning opens with the hit "Mean Street" The song begins with Eddie doing his famous neck tapping technique, and then he plays a sharp bursting riff to get the song going as the rest of the rhythm section joins in. The lyrics deal with a street fight in a dingy part of town: "It's all over but the shouting/I've come to take what's mine/I'm searching for the latest thing/A Break in this routine/I'm talking some new kicks/Ones like you aint ever seen".

This is followed by "Dirty Movies". The song begins with an almost pop like groove, apart from the small bursts of guitar before the song turns into a full-fledged rocker. The song is about a former prom queen who has turned into a porn film star: "Daddy's little sweetie after some damn rainbow/Got the deal in the back of a limo/Now showbiz is so thrilling/the camera rolls she's willing/They won't believe it when they see what they're seeing/Go see baby now!"

"Sinners Swing" is a mean hard rocker that actually features some rather naughty language. The song begins with a speedy guitar riff, and then Roth thunders, "All right you sinners, SWING!? The first verse goes "Danger in the rearview mirror/There's trouble in the wind/Badness bringing up the rear/The menace is loose again/She looks so F****ng good/So sexy and so frail/Something got the bite on me I'm going straight to hell." The chorus features continued chanting of "Get get get get get out and PUSH!?

"Hear About It Later" begins with a somewhat slower groove complete with an acoustic riff before the rock backing begins. The lyrics deal with the pratfalls of stardom. Roth asks if the women in question will "pay my bills" and announces "Tried and convicted/It's winner take all". The song features some excellent riffing by Ed.

"Unchained" is the song off Fair Warning that received the most radio airplay. The song begins with some heavy guitar riffing, then the drumming starts. On this song, Alex Van Halen puts in an inspired performance on drums. Roth goes crazy with the lyrics "Thought you wouldn't miss me until I got a fat city address/Non-stop talker/What a rocker/Blue-eyed murder in a size 5 address/Change!/Nothing stays the same/Unchained/Yeah you hit the ground running".

"Push Comes To Shove" is a slower song. The song features a slower groove than the previous ones, complete with some riffing by both Eddie and Mike. Roth succeeds in reigning in his typical wild man performance for a more subdued performance. Here he sounds positively weary as you hear him ask for a cigarette in the songs opening and sings in the chorus "Push comes to shove/That's the way it goes".

"So This Is Love" has a kind of juke joint feel to it. The song sounds like one that would be good at a bar. The lyrics have quite a bit of that famous Roth sexual innuendo in them.

"Sunday Afternoon In The Park" is a synthesizer driven instrumental that has a current of uneasiness underneath it. Not an essential listen. But still pretty good.

"One Foot Out The Door" is a poppy hard rocking song that details a failed attempt at seducing a married woman. The guitar playing is the best thing about it. Not bad. But probably the weakest track on the album. But then most bands would probably kill to have a track this good as the weakest track.

Overall Fair Warning gets my vote as Van Halen's best album, followed closely by their 1978 debut.

Deep Purple - "Perfect Strangers"

I realize that this CD is probably older that most people reading this review but that doesn't mean it sucks!! Please realize that bands like Deep Purple and folks like Ritchie Blackmore have had an enourmous influence on the rock music that you listen to today!! Their is talent and then their is talent! Deep Puple in its day had its fill of raw talent. From the guitar to the drums to the various lead singers, Deep Purple knew how to write a song!! To disagree would be foolish at best!!

1. Knocking At Your Back Door **Great Song**
2. Under The Gun
3. Nobody's Home
4. Mean Streak
5. Perfect Strangers **Personal Favorite**
6. A Gypsy's Kiss
7. Wasted Sunsets **Blackmore and Gillan at their very best**
8. Hungry Daze
9. Not Responsible
10. Son Of Alerik

Rush - "Chronicles"

The band is only three guys, but you would never know that by listening to their music!

Geddy Lee **The best Bassist ever followed by Chris Squire of Yes" **Different styles**
Alex Lifeson
Neil Peart **An Argument can be made for Neil being the best Rock Drummer of all time**

Without a doubt one of the top ten bands of all time!! If you've never heard Rush (highly doubtful) this is a great starting point. In this two CD collection you will hear the top two songs from each of their albums produced through "Presto"

Here is the line up!

Disc 1
1. Finding My Way
2. Working Man
3. Fly By Night
4. Anthem
5. Bastille Day
6. Lakeside Park
7. 2112 - Overture / The Temples Of Syrinx
8. What You're Doing (Live)
9. A Farewell To Kings
10. Closer To The Heart

Disc 2
1. Tom Sawyer
2. Red Barchetta
3. Limelight
4. A Passage To Bangkok (Live Version)
5. Subdivisions
6. New World Man
7. Distant Early Warning
8. Red Sector A
9. The Big Money
10. Manhattan Project

It is really pointless for me to highlight the good songs as each one in its own way is awesome. Since Rush has compiled a work of art equal to L.Z., it's really impossible to contain their work on only two CD's!! Rush could very easily put out a 4 disc greatest hits like L.Z. and STILL not cover their best works!!

Steve Miller - "Young Hearts"

One of my personal favorites!! Many of you that are reading this post were not even born when Steve Miller was putting out hit after hit! Steve Miller was way before his time and was writing music that was so damn progressive!! No serious music collection is complete without this band. The only problem with this CD is that it's not complete! Capital Records should have made a 2 CD set instead . . . some important works are missing from this CD!! Never-the-less, if you've never listened to The Steve Miller Band and want a starting point, this disc will do!!
